Gettysburg's Robby Maddux scored 3 first-quarter goals to help the 20th-ranked Bullets take a 4-0 lead, and the hosts withstood a second-half Ohio Wesleyan threat to post a win over the Bishops in NCAA Division III tournament first-round action on Wednesday in Gettysburg, Pa.
Gettysburg advances to face the winner of Wednesday's game between Stevenson and Birmingham-Southern in a second-round game on Saturday.
The Bullets enjoyed a significant edge in time of possession during the first quarter and outshot the Bishops, 19-4, during the period. Maddux put Gettysburg on the scoreboard with a goal midway through the quarter, then added scores at the 6:24 and 1:44 marks for a 3-0 lead. Martin Manilla added a man-up goal early in the second quarter to make it 4-0.
Junior midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North) answered less than a minute later to bring the Bishops within 4-1, but Gettysburg countered with a score by Bijan Firouzan at the 9:27 mark.
Sophomore midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) made it 5-2 with a goal off a feed from junior attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) with 5:24 left, and that was how the first half ended.
Maddux and Schnell traded third-quarter man-up goals, and Bassett scored midway through the fourth period to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 7-4, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Bassett and Schnell scored twice apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.
Freshman Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) stopped 11 shots, while junior Stephen Ford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) had 1 save for the Bishops.
Maddux led Gettysburg with 4 goals. Jon Maddalone was credited with 7 saves for the Bullets.
