...I wanted to go to a school with smaller class sizes where I could explore what I am passionate about, get involved in clubs and sports, and make connections with professors and other students...

Name:  Maddie Hoyt

Class year:  2026

Majors:  Exercise science, public health

Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
I chose Ohio Wesleyan because I wanted to go to a school with smaller class sizes where I could explore what I am passionate about, get involved in clubs and sports, and make connections with professors and other students.  I really enjoyed meeting some of the health and human kinetics faculty on my visit, and I also loved meeting the coaches and teammates on the swim team!  Everyone was very welcoming, and it felt like home.

Why did you choose your major?
I chose to pursue exercise science because I have always had a passion for fitness and health.  I have always enjoyed learning about how different systems work together to make the body function, and it has been very interesting to learn how this applies to movement and exercise.  I have loved applying what I have learned in class to my sport!

Why did you choose to compete in sports at Ohio Wesleyan?
I chose to swim at OWU because I really appreciated how knowledgeable and encouraging the coaches are.  They have pushed me to be my best, they have helped me become a stronger swimmer, and they also prioritize my education.  I also loved how supportive and close the team is, and I loved the facility!

What athletic or academic achievement/accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of making it into the Scholar-Athlete Top 50.

What did you do to put yourself in position to achieve that?
I put a lot of effort into my studies by participating in class, going to office hours, and spending time outside of class to further research what I am interested in.  My professors, coaches, and classmates have helped encourage me to keep working hard while pursuing what I love!

What is your number one goal, personal or team, for this season?
Personally, my number one goal is to continue to improve my technique throughout the season so I can PR at conference.  For the team, I would love to see us continue to cheer each other on at practices and meets, and continue to build camaraderie and team spirit.  Even though most view swimming as an individual sport, we wouldn't be as strong as we are without each other's support and encouragement.

Why do you like your event?
My favorite stroke is breaststroke because I love the kick and I like that you get to breathe every stroke.  I also like to swim the sprint/mid-distance events because it is fun to go fast!

What is your dream job and why?
My dream job is to be a pediatric sports physical therapist!  I have always enjoyed working with kids, and I have always loved being involved in the sports field through swimming and coaching.  I would love the opportunity to help kids return to doing what they love in the future!

What is your favorite place to eat in Delaware, and what is your go-to dish there?
My favorite place to eat in Delaware is Mi Cerrito, and I always get the Popeye Tacos.

What is your theme song and why?
My theme song is "New Romantics" by Taylor Swift. It is a fun song that is very upbeat, and I love Taylor Swift!
