Capital 74, Ohio Wesleyan 61
Senior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) scored 4 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with an 11-0 run to wipe out a 10-point halftime deficit, but Capital rallied to take the lead and sealed the outcome by scoring the game's final 11 points to take a non-conference win on Wednesday in Columbus.
The Bishops trailed, 33-21, late in the first half but got a bucket from senior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) just before the first-half buzzer, then carried that momentum over into the second half.
Sophomore post Helen Scheblo (Canal Winchester/St. Francis deSales) opened the second half with a jumper, and lay-ins by Gordon and Quigney brought the Bishops within 33-29. Freshman guard Julia Grimsley (Alliance) buried a 3-pointer and Quigney followed with a jumper from the lane that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 34-33 lead with 15:19 left in regulation time.
Lauren Geroski answered with a 3-pointer for Capital, ending the Crusaders' 5-minute dry spell, but the Bishops would go on to assemble an 11-2 run that included a Grimsley basket, a pair of Quigney hoops, and a 3-point play and another pair of free throws from Gordon that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 49-40 lead with 7:11 to go.
Capital countered with a 14-2 burst, collecting 3-point plays by Shalena Hawkins and Tara Harper, then back-to-back lay-ins by Elizabeth Ladrach and Brea Tackett, before a 4-point play by Geroski put the Crusaders ahead, 54-51, with 4:32 remaining.
The Crusaders still led, 61-55, with 2:25 left when Ohio Wesleyan battled back with 3-pointers from Quigney and senior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) to slice the deficit to 63-61 with 1:32 remaining, but Capital sealed the outcome by scoring the game's last 11 points, going 6-for-6 from the line and mixing in a 3-pointer by Tackett.
Capital opened the game with a 9-0 run that included a Tackett 3-pointer and a basket and a pair of free throws from Stacy Timmerman.
Cordell put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer at the 14:09 mark, and Gordon followed with a basket and a free throw and Quigney added a bucket to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 11-8.
Capital responded with an 8-0 run, and the Crusaders would lead by as many as 15 points before the Bishops rallied to within 10 at the intermission.
Quigney led the Bishops with 19 points, and Gordon followed with 18 points and shared the team lead with 9 rebounds. Cordell added 10 points and a team-high 4 assists, and Scheblo also shared the team lead with 9 boards.
Tackett and Hawkins scored 13 points apiece for Capital, and Timmerman and Ladrach had 12 points apiece. Hilary Kuhns added 10 points for the Crusaders.
