Ohio Wesleyan 66, Oberlin 62

Senior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) buried a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in overtime and freshman post Tamra Londot (Utica) provided timely contributions on both ends of the court as the Bishops held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Senior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) had given the Bishops a 61-59 lead with a lay-in early in the extra session, but Oberlin's Syrea Thomas knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:35 left, giving the Yeowomen a 62-61 lead.

Quigney answered with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, restoring the lead to the Bishops with 1:16 to play, and after an Oberlin miss, Londot sank a pair of free throws to seal the outcome.

Quigney had sent the game into overtime by hitting the first of 2 free throws with :13 left in regulation time, but Quigney's second shot went awry and Oberlin cleared the rebound.

Oberlin's Allison Anderson drove for a potential game-winning basket, but Londot was there to block the shot. Ellen Neumann grabbed the rebound for Oberlin, but her follow shot hit the bottom of the backboard with :01.4 on the clock.

The Yeowomen led for a majority of the first half, breaking a 2-2 tie with a Kelly Warlich lay-in and an Ashley Young 3-pointer and eventually expanding their lead to 14-8 on a Thomas 3-pointer and a lay-in from Allison Gannon.

Ohio Wesleyan responded with an 18-1 outburst, with Cordell collecting a 3-pointer, a pair of fast-break lay-ins and a 3-point play, and Quigney capping the run with 6 straight points to give the Bishops a 26-15 lead with 4:19 left in the first half.

The Bishops still led, 34-24, at the intermission, and were up by a 43-34 count with 14:22 left in regulation time.

Oberlin came back with some torrid outside shooting, gathering 3-pointers from Warlich, Thomas, Young, and Anderson, with the last bringing the Yeowomen within 49-48 with 8:22 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan withstood that run, countering with a pair of Quigney free throws and lay-ins from sophomore guard Kandis Walker (Utica) and Cordell to pad the margin to 55-48 with 5 minutes to go.

The Yeowomen rallied again, eventually tying the game at 57 on a 4-point play by Thomas that also drew the fifth personal on senior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) with 2:05 to play.

The Bishops took the lead on their next possession when Londot was fouled and sank the second of 2 free throws for a 58-57 lead, only to see Warlich score on Oberlin's next trip down the court, setting up the final 30 seconds of regulation.

Cordell led the Bishops with 23 points and 5 assists and shared the team lead with 8 rebounds. Quigney finished with 16 points, and Londot added 11 points and shared the team lead with 8 boards.

Thomas led Oberlin with 19 points, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Warlich added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Anderson had 11 points and 6 assists.
