Gordon, Cordell Power Women's Basketball Over Allegheny

Ohio Wesleyan 92, Allegheny 86

Senior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) and senior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) scored 4 points apiece during a late 10-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops led by as many as 12 points during the second half, and still held a 69-58 advantage on a jumper from the lane by senior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) with 8:35 left in regulation time.

Allegheny rallied with lay-ins by Heidi Goeller and Ann Ryan, a pair of free throws apiece by Daryl Ford and Laura Magnelli, a pair of Ford lay-ins, and a pair of Gregory free throws to close to within 77-75 with 4:02 remaining, and when Britni Mohney sank a 3-pointer with exactly 3:00 to play, the Gators had taken an 80-79 lead.

Cordell responded with a lay-in to give the Bishops the lead, and Gordon followed with a steal and a pair of free throws for an 83-80 advantage. After a Gator miss, it was Gordon with a lay-in off a Cordell pass to make it 85-80 with 1:15 to play.

Quigney followed with 4 straight free throws, pushing the margin to 89-80, and sophomore guard Kandis Walker (Utica) added a lay-in with :23 left that restored the 9-point margin at 92-83.

After Allegheny took its only lead of the first half at 18-17 on a 3-pointer by Erica Restich, the Bishops erupted for 12 straight points to retake the lead.

Gordon kicked off that Ohio Wesleyan run with a lay-in and followed with a jumper. A pair of Walker free throws and a Cordell lay-in preceded 2 more Gordon lay-ins that gave the Bishops a 29-18 lead with 9:43 left in the half.

The Gators answered with an 8-0 run that included a pair of Jill Gregory lay-ins along with layups from Restich and Ryan, and Allegheny pulled to within 35-33 on Ford's 3-point play with 1:35 to play in the period.

Ohio Wesleyan pushed the lead back to 8 points on a Cordell jumper, a timely putback by junior guard Elyse Wenger (Loveland), and a pair of Gordon free throws. The Bishops led by 6 points at halftime and extended the lead to 12 points on 2 occasions during the second half.

Gordon hit her first 8 shots from the field -- including a trio of 3-pointers -- and had 21 points at halftime before finishing with a team-high 29 markers. Cordell added 26 points and a team-high 6 assists, sophomore post Helen Scheblo (Canal Winchester/St. Francis DeSales) scored 12 points, and Quigney tallied 11 points and snagged a team-best 9 rebounds.

Gregory led the Gators with 21 points, Restich scored 17 points, Ford finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Goeller added 10 points.
