DePauw 34, Ohio Wesleyan 10
Freshman halfback Kevin Herman (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) scored on a 1-yard run to give Ohio Wesleyan a 10-0 first-quarter lead, but DePauw responded with 34 straight points to hand the Bishops a non-conference loss on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
Sophomore cornerback Chris Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./Chapel Hill) picked off a Drew Seaman pass midway through the first quarter, setting up the Bishop offense at its own 44-yard line. The Bishops ground out 3 first downs, with freshman fullback Kevin Mulumba (Fairfax, Va./Falls Church) moving the chains twice with 3 carries for 25 yards, then Herman picking up 7 yards on a third-and-2 call from the DePauw 23. Herman fielded a swing pass from sophomore quarterback Mason Espinosa (Cookeville, Tenn.) and picked up 7 yards on third-and-8 from the Tiger 14, and facing fourth-and-1 at the DePauw 7, the Bishops elected to kick, and freshman kicker Miles MacKenzie (Denver, Colo./East) came on for a 23-yard field goal try that split the uprights to put the Bishops on the scoreboard.
On the Tigers' ensuing possession, junior linebacker Tyler Sheetz (Eighty Four, Pa./Peters Township) sacked Seaman on third down, forcing a fumble that junior defensive end James Huddleston (Pontiac, Mich./Saint Marys Preparatory) recovered at the DePauw 31-yard line.
The Bishops struck quickly, with Espinosa hitting sophomore tight end Erik Wall (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) for 29 yards and a first down at the DePauw 2. Herman carried twice after that, going over from 1 yard out on the second try, for a 10-0 Bishop lead.
Huddleston recorded a sack to end DePauw's next possession, but the Tigers got a big edge in field position when the southerly winds helped Eric Malm's punt sail 53 yards and out of bounds on the Ohio Wesleyan 2-yard line.
On the first play from scrimmage, Cody Crook tripped up Mulumba in the end zone for a safety, bringing DePauw within 10-2, and on the ensuing drive, the Tigers converted thrice on third down and once on fourth down, with Seaman finding Bobby Coburn over the middle on a 15-yard scoring play. Malm's point after kick made it a 10-9 game.
After a short Bishop punt into those same winds, DePauw took over at the Bishop 33-yard line, and on third down, Seaman connected with Coburn again for a 31-yard scoring play, then found D.J. Steward for a 2-point conversion that gave the Tigers a 17-10 halftime lead.
The Tigers added to their lead in the third quarter, when Matt Johnson picked off an Espinosa pass and returned it 36 yards for a score, and added another score when Seaman found Steward on a fade pattern in the right corner of the end zone to make it 31-10.
Espinosa completed 13 of 32 passes for 96 yards and a score. Herman and freshman split end Scott Jenkins (Cuyahoga Falls) caught 4 passes apiece, Jenkins for 20 yards and Herman for 15 yards. Mulumba led the Bishops with 29 yards on 9 rushes.
Defensive standouts for the Bishops included Huddleston, who made 12 tackles, including 3 sacks and 5 for loss, forced a fumble and recovered another fumble; Sheetz, who led the Bishops with 15 stops, including a sack and 3 for loss, along with a forced fumble; and senior safety Kyle Karczynski (Caledonia, Ontario/McKinnon Park), who made 8 stops.
Seaman completed 17 of 27 passes for 166 yards and 3 scores, with Steward catching 4 passes for 34 yards and Coburn making 2 catches for 46 yards and 2 scores. Nikko Sansone led DePauw rushers with 62 yards on 11 carries.
Jack Quinn led the Tiger defense with 7 tackles.
