Capital 56, Ohio Wesleyan 38
Freshman wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) buried 3 straight 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan closed a 12-point deficit to 3 points late in the first half, but Capital held off the Bishop rally and pulled away in the second half to win the championship game of the Mount St. Joseph Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by the College of Mount St. Joseph on Friday in Cincinnati.
The Crusaders raced to an 8-0 lead before sophomore post Tamra Londot (Utica) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer.
Capital answered with lay-ins by Hilary Kuhns and Rebekah Will, and the Crusaders pushed the lead to a dozen when 3-pointers by Kuhns and Courtney Dingess made it 20-8 with 6:56 left in the first period.
Corbett knocked down her trio of trifectas as Ohio Wesleyan pared the deficit to 21-17 with 4:52 left in the half, and when Londot added a hoop and junior guard Kandis Walker (Utica) contributed a free throw and a lay-in, the Bishops had closed to within 25-22 with 1:35 to play.
The Crusaders answered by closing the half with a pair of lay-ins from Stacy Timmerman and another by Shalena Hawkins, taking a 31-22 lead at the intermission.
A Corbett jumper and a pair of Walker free throws brought the Bishops within 33-26 early in the second half, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Corbett led the Bishops with 11 points. Londot grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds, and freshman guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) dished out a team-leading 4 assists.
Hawkins led Capital with 14 points.
Londot represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
