Ohio Wesleyan 64, Oberlin 49
Senior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) tallied 8 points during a 15-0 second-half run that helped Ohio Wesleyan break open a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday in Oberlin.
The Yeowomen jumped to a 5-0 lead on a lay-in by Allison Gannon and a 3-pointer from Kelly Warlich, and added a 3-point play and a lay-in by Syrea Thomas and a lay-in from Allison Anderson to push the margin to 14-4 with 13:20 left in the first half.
Oberlin still led, 20-12, on Christina Spencer's jumper with 8:43 left in the first half. Each team would score just one basket during the remainder of the period, but the difference was that the Bishops got back into the game at the free throw line, with freshman guard Kalee Seagle (Hilliard/Darby) hitting a pair of charity tosses at the 6:09 mark, freshman guard Julia Grimsley (Alliance) adding 2 more free throws with 3:47 to go, and after the teams traded baskets, senior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) sinking a pair from the line with :05 left to bring the Bishops within 22-21 at the break.
Senior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) completed the Bishop comeback with a pair of free throws during the first minute of the second half, giving Ohio Wesleyan its first lead of the game, and the Bishops still held a 37-36 lead with 11:21 left in regulation time.
Cordell started the decisive Bishop run with a jumper from the lane, then hit a lay-in. Gordon followed with a hoop before 2 more Cordell lay-ins pushed the lead to an even dozen. After Seagle added a fast-break score, Gordon capped the run with a pair of free throws that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 52-36 lead with 6:57 to play, and the lead would remain in double figures for the remainder of the contest.
Quigney led the Bishops with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Gordon added 17 points, and Cordell finished with 12 points and a team-high 4 assists.
Warlich led Oberlin with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Malisa Hoak scored 11 points.
