Capital 67, Ohio Wesleyan 56
Senior wing Elyse Wenger (Loveland) hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 12-1 run to open the second half, but Capital took the lead with a 13-2 run and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference play on Monday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Wenger had buried a 3-pointer as the Bishops wiped out a 5-point first-half deficit to tie the game at 16-16, but the Crusaders scored the next 8 points to take the lead, with Stacy Timmerman hitting back-to-back lay-ins to start off the Capital run.
Ohio Wesleyan rallied with 3-pointers by freshman wing Caroline Welker (Delaware/Hayes) and Wenger, and the Bishops were still within 32-30 at the break.
Wenger hit another 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring and give Ohio Wesleyan the lead, and after a lay-in by sophomore post Tamra Londot (Utica), it was Wenger from downtown again, stretching the Bishop lead to 38-32 less than 2 minutes into the period.
Londot followed with a fast-break lay-in to make it 40-32, and after Capital's Hilary Kuhns sank one of 2 free throws, freshman post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) canned a jumper to give the Bishops a 42-33 lead with 17:07 left in regulation time.
Capital got back into the game by scoring the next 8 points, with Kuhns collecting 3 in a row, but the Bishops pushed the lead back to 47-43 on a pair of free throws by freshman post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) with 12:44 to play.
Shanela Hawkins then scored 3 times as the Crusaders reeled off the game's next 10 points, and after a Welker steal and lay-in ended that Capital run, Rebekah Will answered with a 3-pointer to give the Crusaders a 56-49 lead with 8:45 remaining.
McRae scored on a putback to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 58-54 with 6:39 left, but that would be the Bishops' last basket of the game.
Capital's Cookie Geroski hit a key 3-pointer to extend the visitors' lead to 61-54 with 2:56 left, and Geroski would seal the win with a pair of free throws during the final minute.
Londot led the Bishops with 14 points, while Wenger finished with 12 points. Henning grabbed a team-high 8 boards and freshman guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) collected 6 assists.
Hawkins paced Capital with 18 points, while Timmerman added 16 points.
