Ohio Wesleyan 56, Oberlin 47

Freshman wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) buried a pair of 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a 12-0 run and went on to defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The win was the Bishops' first of the season in NCAC competition after opening the conference schedule with a gauntlet that included Allegheny, the 2011 NCAC tournament runner-up; defending champion Denison, who ran the table during the 2010-11 regular season; and DePauw, another 2011 NCAA playoff team that joins the NCAC for 2011-12.

Oberlin hit its first 5 shots from the field in building an early 10-4 lead.

The Bishops closed to within 12-10 behind the inside scoring of freshman post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney), but the Yeowomen reeled off the next 7 points to take their biggest lead of the game at 19-10 with 7:53 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan again rallied to within a basket as Corbett hit a 3-pointer and freshman post Kristin Henning contributed a pair of free throws and a lay-in that made it a 22-20 game, and the Bishops were still within 25-21 at the half.

Freshman guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) opened the second-half scoring with a lay-in before a Corbett 3-pointer put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay at 26-25 with 16:32 left in regulation time.  Sophomore post Tamra Londot (Utica) added a pair of hoops sandwiched around another Corbett trifecta, with the 12-0 run giving the Bishops a 33-25 advantage with 14:08 to play.

Oberlin rallied with an Ashley Young jumper and a pair of free throws by Allison Gannon, and the visitors were still within 48-43 when Malisa Hoak knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:27 in regulation time, but senior wing Elyse Wenger (Loveland) slammed the door on the Yeowomen by drilling a 3-pointer from the right corner, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 51-43 lead with :54 to play, and Corbett sealed the win by going 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch.

McQuade led the Bishops with 16 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds and 3 assists, while Corbett finished with 14 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Hoak paced Oberlin with 10 points.
