Ohio Wesleyan 81, Oberlin 72

Sophomore wing Julia Grimsley (Alliance) drilled a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and added a pair of free throws down the stretch as the Bishops defeated Oberlin in overtime in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Oberlin.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a pair of 5-point leads on baskets by freshman wing Caroline Welker (Delaware/Hayes) during the waning minutes of regulation time, the latter making it a 65-60 game with 3:38 to play.

The Yeowomen answered with a 3-pointer by Christina Marquette on their ensuing possession, then tied the game on Allison Gannon's lay-in with 1:37 to play.

Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but sophomore post Tamra Londot (Utica) misfired on a pair of shots during the final 90 seconds, as did Oberlin's Gannon, who missed a pair of lay-ins, the second coming just before the buzzer.

Grimsley opened the overtime period with a 3-pointer that put the Bishops ahead to stay, and after Ashley Young hit a pair of free throws for Yeowomen, Ohio Wesleyan pulled away with scores by freshman post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) and Londot, along with a free throw by freshman wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) that gave the Bishops a 76-69 lead with :57 to go.

Oberlin whilttled the margin to 76-72 with a pair of free throws by Marquette and another by Gannon, but the Bishops put the game away at the line, with Grimsley hitting a pair of charity tosses, Londot adding one, and freshman guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) hitting 2 more with :05 left.

Ohio Wesleyan scored 16 points during the overtime session, one short of the school record of 17 set against Ohio Dominican on Feb. 20, 1983.

Welker led the Bishops with 18 points, Londot finished with 16 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds, McRae scored 15 points, and McQuade dished out 6 assists.
