Denison Defeats Bishops

3/31/2012 7:30:00 PM

Denison 12, Ohio Wesleyan 5

Freshman attacker Edwin Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) and freshman attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) scored goals 6 seconds apart to give Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but 10th-ranked Denison answered with an 8-0 run and went on to post a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Saturday in Granville.

Foster's goal off a feed from junior midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North) at the 11:59 mark of the first quarter, then senior midfielder Jesse Lawrence (McLean, Va./Maret (D.C.) School) won the ensuing face-off and got the ball to Minkler, who scored just 6 seconds later for a 2-0 Bishop lead.

The Big Red answered in similar fashion, pulling within 2-1 on a score by Zach Walsh just over a minute later, then evening the score on Alex Hardt's goal 45 seconds after that.

Denison took the lead on a Davis Lukens goal midway through the first quarter, then got a pair of goals from Eddie Vita and another by Lukens to take a 6-2 lead after the first period.

The Big Red continued their run into the second quarter with scores by Will Koontz and Walsh to make it an 8-2 game.

Senior attacker A.J. Pellis (Edmonton, Alberta/St. Francis Xavier) ended the Bishop drought with a man-up goal in the closing minutes of the half, and the Bishops were still within 12-5 after Bassett scored with 10:02 left in regulation time, but that was as close as Ohio Wesleyan would come.

Pellis led the Bishops with 2 goals.  Freshman Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) had 17 saves in the Bishop crease.

Vita paced Denison with 4 goals and an assist.  Nick Petracca recorded 11 saves for the Big Red.
