Ohio Wesleyan 5, Albion 4
Sophomore Richie Karban (Elyria), junior Matt Swaim (Oregon/Clay), and junior John Rissell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./University School) were double winners as Ohio Wesleyan finished off the inaugural NCAC/MIAA Challenge with a narrow win over Albion on Saturday in Oberlin.
Karban and Rissell teamed up for an 8-3 win over Tucker Blake and David Richter at No. 1 doubles. Karban then defeated Richter, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, while Rissell stopped Brandon Kosinski, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Swaim outlasted Steve Manciu by a 6-2, 7-5 count at No. 5 singles. Earlier, he had paired with senior Ryan Leslie (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) for an 8-6 verdict over Danny Frank and Will Pearl at No. 3 doubles.
Leslie and Thieman each fell in split sets in singles play, Leslie by scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Blake at No. 3 singles, and Thieman by scores of 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to Frank at No. 1 singles.
