John Carroll 3, Ohio Wesleyan 1
John Carroll pushed across 3 unearned runs in the third inning and made the lead stand in defeating Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference play on Wednesday at Littick Field.
The game was called because of rain after 6 complete innings.
The Blue Streaks took the lead as Mark Huddle led off the third with a single to left. Connor Marrero followed with a bunt to third base, but sophomore third baseman Sean Vollenweider (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) threw wildly to second in an attempt to get the lead runner, with Huddle checking in at third on the play. Bobby Sabatino followed with a grounder to short, but senior shortstop Steve Gaydos (Strongsville) saw his throw to first sail offline, with Huddle scoring and Marrero continuing to third. After Sabatino stole second, Dan Potter plated Marrero with an infield out, and one out later, Tom Hickey singled home Sabatino to make it 3-0.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. Freshman catcher Collin Finn (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) lined a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch, then junior second baseman Zach Bott (Dublin/Coffman) singled and stole second, but Blue Streak starter Andrew Doring struck out Gaydos and got senior first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) on an infield out to end the inning.
John Carroll loaded the bases in the fifth, but sophomore righthander Andrew Parise (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) came on to retire Huddle on a fielder's choice to get out of the inning.
The Bishops came back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with nobody out as senior outfielder Seth Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) struck out but reached first safely when the ball got past JCU catcher Potter, then freshman outfielder J.J. Buckey (Toledo/Ottawa Hills) singled and Finn was hit by a pitch. Doring retired Bott on a fly ball for the first out, with Frentsos tagging up and scoring on the play, then got Gaydos on a called third strike. Tyler Ferretti came on in relief to face Knezovich, and induced a fly ball to center to end the threat.
Sophomore righthander Greg Hock (Lewis Center/Bishop Watterson) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
