Wooster 3, Ohio Wesleyan 0
Freshman outfielder Chelsea Denman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) drove in a run that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth, but Wooster rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday in Wooster.
In the nightcap, Wooster's Jenn Horton threw a 2-hit shutout as the Scots completed the sweep.
Junior catcher Brooke Nethers (Newark/Licking Valley) manufactured a run that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead in the opener, leading off the game with a single, moving to second on a sacrifice, stealing third, and scoring on a passed ball.
Denman doubled home a run in the fourth to increase the Bishop lead to 2-0.
It looked like that would be more than enough for sophomore righthander Dani Haley (Maumee/Anthony Wayne), who breezed through the first 5.0 innings, facing the minimum. Wooster's Erica Villa had led off the first inning with a single but was thrown out trying to steal second, and Haley proceeded to retire the next 14 batters.
That streak ended when Gina Pirolozzi led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run, but Haley interspersed a pair of popups among singles by Danielle Grooms and Villa, giving the Scots 2 on with 2 out. Demi Hart then doubled home both runners to put the Scots ahead, and Horton followed with a single up the middle to score Hart for a 4-2 lead.
Down to their last 3 outs, the Bishops evened the game as freshman outfielder Rachel Scott (Tucker, Ga./The Westminster Schools) led off with a pinch-hit single and sophomore shortstop Erica Bryan (Wapakoneta) singled, with both runners scoring on a double by freshman first baseman Cassi Ladina (Dublin/Coffman). Haley came up with a chance to give the Bishops the lead, but Horton came on in relief of Pirolozzi, and got Haley on a line drive to left to end the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the eighth when freshman infielder Steph Cunningham (Seville/Medina) reached on an error by Scot shortstop Lauren Swinehart, junior outfielder Morgan Hall (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a bunt single, junior third baseman Stefanie Rieder (Logan) sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Denman lofted a fly ball to left to score Cunningham with the go-ahead run.
Wooster opened the bottom of the eighth with infield singles by Paige Goldberg and Hart. Horton then reached on an error by Haley, with Goldberg scoring on the play, and Swinehart followed with a walk-off single to score Hart.
Haley struck out 10 and walked 2 in pitching the complete game.
Horton was the winning pitcher in relief for Wooster.
Wooster took the lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap as Pirolozzi drew a 2-out walk, Grooms reached on an error by Bryan, and Skye Patterson followed with a single to right to score Pirolozzi, with Grooms continuing around to score on Hall's error on the play.
The Scots added an insurance run in the sixth when Carly Schoenstein singled, stole second, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on a passed ball.
Sophomore righthander Amanda Barker (Granville) worked the complete game, scattering 5 hits and striking out 2 while walking 2.
Horton allowed a pair of singles in the game, both coming off the bat of Hall.
