Box Score Ohio Wesleyan 15, St. Vincent 14
Junior attacker Annie Swanson (McLean, Va./Langley) scored early in the second overtime period, and Ohio Wesleyan withstood a potential game-tying shot to take a non-conference win over St. Vincent on Sunday at South Field.
The Bishops trailed, 14-11, after St. Vincent's Megan Fisher scored with 6:38 left in regulation time.
Sophomore midfielder Cate Bailey (Hingham, Mass.) turned the tide, however, winning the ensuing draw, going straight to the Bearcat goal, and finding the back of the net to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 14-12.
It was Bailey again moments later, fielding a pass from Swanson and ripping a shot past Bearcat keeper Jenn Forsyth to pull the Bishops within 14-13 with 4:13 to play.
Freshman midfielder Saige Bell (Newbury Park, Calif./Oak Park) evened the score at 14-14 with an unassisted goal at the 2:33 mark.
Freshman midfielder Abbie Love (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) won the ensuing draw, giving the Bishops a chance at the go-ahead score, but Forsyth preserved the tie by stopping free-position shots by Swanson and Bell.
Bell came back with a key defensive play in the other end, causing a turnover and capturing the ground ball with 15 seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.
Sophomore midfielder Theresa Wolfgang (Medina) won the draw to open the second extra session, and Swanson put the Bishops ahead to stay shortly thereafter, tallying an unassisted goal just 37 seconds into the period.
St. Vincent got the ball back with more than a minute to play, and the Bearcats patiently looked for a good shot. With less than 15 seconds to play, Nora Posival circled the goal and fired from close range, but her shot sailed wide, and the Bishops were able to run out the clock.
The Bearcats took an early 3-1 lead behind 2 goals by Fisher and a goal and an assist from Povisil, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 4-1 run that included 2 goals apiece from Bailey and Bell.
Junior midfielder Meredith Wholley (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Wolfgang scored goals to close out the half and tie the game at 9-9, and the game was still tied at 11-11 on Bell's goal with 15:37 left in regulation time.
St. Vincent broke the tie with a goal from a wide-open Kaley Burkardt, and goals from Povisil and Fisher pushed the Bearcat lead to 14-11 with 6:38 to go, setting up the Ohio Wesleyan comeback.
Bailey led the Bishops with 5 goals, while Bell finished with 4 goals and an assist.
