Sophomore guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) hit a game-tying 3-pointer and came up with a pair of steals down the stretch, and freshman wing Emily Julius (Avon) scored the go-ahead bucket as Ohio Wesleyan finished the game with a 9-0 run in defeating Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday in Oberlin.
The win was Ohio Wesleyan's first of the season in NCAC competition and snapped the Bishops' 9-game losing streak.
Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 53-50, after Oberlin's Allison Gannon hit a lay-in with 1:38 left in regulation time.
McQuade knocked down a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, then stole the ball from Malisa Hoak at the 1:08 mark, giving the ball back to the Bishops.
Julius nailed a jumper with :52 remaining to put the Bishops ahead to stay, and after Oberlin missed a shot with :21 to play and retained possession when the ball went out of bounds, McQuade stole the ball again and was fouled.
McQuade hit both ends of a one-and-one, extending the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 57-53 with :16 to play, and sophomore post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) tacked on a pair of free throws with :05 left to ice the victory.
The Bishops had broken a 6-6 tie with a lay-in by freshman guard Hanna Fedorka (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) and a 3-pointer by junior wing Julia Grimsley (Alliance), and would push their lead to 22-10 on baskets by junior post Tamra Londot (Utica), Julius, and Henning.
The Yeowomen closed to within 30-25 on Gannon's 3-pointer just before the first-half buzzer, then opened the second half with a pair of free throws and a hoop from Christina Marquette before Hoak's 3-pointer gave Oberlin a 32-31 lead.
Oberlin went on a 9-0 run midway through the half, getting 3-pointers from Marquette and Caroline Hamilton to take a 47-40 lead, and another pair of Marquette baskets gave the Yeowomen their biggest lead of the game at 51-42 with 5:36 to go.
Henning's lay-in with 4:26 left started the Ohio Wesleyan comeback, and after baskets by McQuade and Julius and a pair of Henning free throws, the Bishops were within 51-50 with 1:57 remaining, setting the stage for McQuade's game-tying trifecta.
Henning led the Bishops with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Julius and Londot added 12 points apiece. McQuade collected 4 assists.
Marquette scored a game-high 24 points for Oberlin.
