Calvin 70, Ohio Wesleyan 60
Junior guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) scored all 13 of her points during the second half as Ohio Wesleyan whittled a double-digit deficit into a single-possession game, but Calvin put the game out of reach with a late 10-0 run en route to a win in the first round of the BW Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University on Friday in Berea.
Calvin will face Baldwin Wallace, an 87-55 winner over Defiance in Friday's other first-round game, in the championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Ohio Wesleyan takes on Defiance in the consolation game, set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Sophomore post Emily Julius (Avon) converted a 3-point play to give the Bishops an early 3-2 lead, but the Knights answered with a 12-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers from Kayla Engelhard.
Senior wing Julia Grimsley (Alliance) knocked down a 3-pointer and junior post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) sank a pair of buckets from the lane as the Bishops came back to within 16-12 at the midway point of the first half.
Calvin closed out the half with an 8-1 burst as Kelly Verkaik and Breanna Verkaik each contributed a lay-in, the latter giving the Knights a 35-22 lead at the break.
McQuade opened the second half with a pair of free throws and added a lay-in, and senior post Tamra Londot (Utica) and Julius added a pair of hoops apiece to fuel a 12-4 Ohio Wesleyan run, and McQuade's lay-in at the 14:47 mark brought the Bishops within 39-37.
Ohio Wesleyan was still within 41-39 after McRae's lay-in with 13:27 to go, but Calvin scored the next 7 points, highlighted by an Abby VanderWoude 3-point play, and the Knights stretched the margin to 52-41 on Engelhard's fast-break bucket with 7:06 to go.
McQuade hit a pair of free throws with 4:21 left to make it a 58-52 game, but Calvin scored the next 10 points, with Hannah Acre hitting a pair of lay-ins and a pair of free throws and Breanna Verkaik sinking a 3-pointer to give Calvin a 68-52 lead with 2:10 left.
McQuade led the Bishops with 13 points, while Londot and McRae finished with 10 apiece. McRae grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and Grimsley led all players with 6 assists.
Breanna Verkaik led Calvin with 16 points.
