Sophomore wing Caroline Welker (Delaware/Hayes) hit a lay-in that tied the game at 64 with 1:51 left in regulation time, but Allegheny scored the final 3 points of the game to nip Ohio Wesleyan in a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal contest on Tuesday in Meadville, Pa.
The Gators had taken a 64-59 lead on Daryl Ford's lay-in with 2:57 left in regulation time.
Sophomore wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) knocked down a timely 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, bringing the Bishops within 64-62, and after Corbett stole the ball, Welker drove and scored to even the game at 64.
Both teams had a chance to take the lead but traded missed shots, and Ohio Wesleyan got the ball back after Marina Scarantino's turnover with :38 left.
Rachel Vigliotti then made the key play for the Gators, stealing the ball from sophomore guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) and going in for a lay-in that gave the hosts a 66-64 lead with :13 to go.
Corbett's potential game-tying shot was off the mark with :06 left, and Ann Ryan hit the first of 2 free throws with :01 left to account for the final margin.
Allegheny built an early 14-3 lead, getting 3-pointers from Kendall Hoffman and Jessica Mrdjenovich, as well as a pair of hoops from both Ford and Ryan.
Freshman wing Emily Julius (Avon) knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to help the Bishops close the gap to 4 points, and another Julius 3-ball to open the second half made it a 1-point game.
The Bishops came all the way back to tie the game with a pair of free throws from junior wing Julia Grimsley (Alliance) and a Julius jumper, and a 3-point play by McQuade , followed by a Grimsley lay-in, gave Ohio Wesleyan its first lead of the game at 42-40 with 15:00 left in regulation time.
Three-pointers from Vigliotti and Mrdjenovich fueled a 14-4 run that gave the Gators a 54-46 lead at the midway point of the period, and Allegheny still led a 58-50 lead when a pair of Corbett free throws and a 3-pointer by freshman guard Hanna Fedorka (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) brought the Bishops within striking distance, setting up the final few minutes.
Julius led the Bishops with 15 points, while Welker added 11 points. Junior post Tamra Londot (Utica) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Ford led Allegheny with 20 points.
