Junior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) scored twice during the first quarter and finished with a career-high 4 goals to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Concordia on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
Helms staked the Bishops to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the fourth minute of play, and senior attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) added a score to make it 2-0 midway through the period.
Senior midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North) and Helms added goals later in the period, offsetting Falcon scores by Justin Krause and Sam Wladyka, and Bassett and junior midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) opened the second quarter with goals to increase the Bishop lead to 6-2.
Concordia rallied with a goal by Marino Best late in the half, but the Bishops finished off the period by getting a man-up score from freshman attacker George Rice (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin) with :10 left to play, giving the hosts a 7-3 lead at the break.
Ohio Wesleyan broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Falcons, 5-1, as Helms had a pair of goals and senior midfielder Scotty Rosenthal (Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy), Schnell, and sophomore midfielder Kevin McCarley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) added single scores.
Helms led the Bishops with 4 goals and an assist, while Bassett, McCarley, and Schnell scored twice apiece. Short dished out 3 assists and scored once.
Sophomore Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) made 3 saves during the first 3 quarters, and sophomore Jonathan Duncan (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) had 2 stops during the fourth quarter.
Wladyka and Danny Dahms each had 2 goals for Concordia. Zack Davis finished with 12 saves for the Falcons.
