Junior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) tallied 5 times as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 12-0 run and went on to post a non-conference win over Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
Helms set up sophomore attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) on the Bishops' first goal of the game, then scored himself less than 2 minutes later, and again less than a minute after that.
Midway through the first quarter, Ohio Wesleyan tacked on 3 goals in a span of exactly one minute, with sophomore midfielder Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) scoring at the 7:16 mark, Umbach notching a man-up goal with 6:45 left, and Helms adding a score with 6:16 to play.
Senior midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North) finished the first-quarter scoring with a 2-man-down goal, courtesy of an assist by senior defenseman K.C. Callahan (University Heights/St. Ignatius), and the Bishops would win the ensuing face-off and kill the rest of the quarter and the 2-man-down situation.
Bassett scored in the opening seconds of the second period to make it 8-0, and scores by freshman defenseman John Griffin (Oceanside, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon (Mass.)) and Foster followed before Helms scored goals just 14 seconds apart to give the Bishops a 12-0 lead with 9:29 left in the first half.
Matt Ivie put Birmingham-Southern on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 6:16 mark of the quarter, but the Bishops would take a 14-1 lead at the intermission.
Foster's goal opened the second-half scoring, which was highlighted by a hat trick by freshman attacker George Rice (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin) and a pair of goals from freshman midfielder Evan Nolting (South Burlington, Vt.).
Helms finished with 5 goals and an assist, while Foster added 4 goals and an assist and Bassett and Rice scored thrice apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) had 2 saves during the first 20 minutes of play, and sophomore Jonathan Duncan (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) had 8 saves during the final 40 minutes.
Ivie led the Panthers with a goal and an assist. Andrew Huffman and Conor Perine combined for 15 saves for Birmingham-Southern.
