Ohio Wesleyan 5, Denison 2

Junior outfielder Sean Vollenweider (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales), senior first baseman Ben Steele (Delaware/Hayes), senior first baseman James Toland (Stow/Walsh Jesuit), and sophomore outfielder J.J. Buckey (Toledo/Ottawa Hills) drove in 2 runs apiece to power Ohio Wesleyan over Denison in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.

In the nightcap, Buckey drove in 2 runs as the Bishops completed the sweep.

Ohio Wesleyan took an early lead with 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener.  Vollenweider led off with a single, took second on an infield out, and moved to third on a single by freshman third baseman Aaron Caputo (Strongsville).  Steele followed with a grounder to second, but Denison second baseman Jake Meegan's throw pulled shortstop Kyle Clemmenson off the bag, with Vollenweider scoring on the play.  Toland followed with a single to score Caputo, and after an infield hit by freshman second baseman Taylor Hutchison (Whitehall/Whitehall-Yearling), Buckey legged out an infield chopper to score Steele.

That would be more than enough for senior righthander Brandon Sega (Columbus/Upper Arlington), who took a no-hitter into the fourth inning.  Sega allowed 3 hits while blanking the Big Red for 6.0 innings.  He struck out 5 and walked 3 en route to the win.

The Bishops broke the game open in the fourth, piling up 7 hits and adding a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly along the way.  Vollenweider's 2-run single capped the 8-run rally.

Tim Duxbury was the starting and losing pitcher for Denison.

It was Denison taking an early lead in the nightcap, with Danny Kraus smashing a double on the opening pitch of the game and moving to third on a sacrifice.  After Clemmenson walked and took second on a wild pitch, Ryan Loehnert singled up the middle to score both runners.

That would be it for the Big Red, however, as sophomore lefthander Charles Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) blanked the visitors on 1 hit over the next 6-plus innings.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead with 3 runs in the bottom of the second.  Steele was hit by a pitch to open the inning and freshman outfielder Steven Moore (Hamilton) followed with a single, and after Toland bunted the runners over to second and third, Hutchison was hit by a pitch to fill the sacks.  Buckey then sent a bouncer to the hole at shortstop, and while Clemmenson was able to come up with the ball, his throw to third base to get Moore was wild.  Moore continued around third toward the plate, and Big Red third baseman Andrew Tuohy's throw home was wild, allowing Moore to score.  Freshman outfielder Ryan Froman (Strasburg/Strasburg-Franklin) lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Hutchison with the go-ahead run.

Buckey added some insurance in the fourth with a long drive to left center that hit the top of the fence and continued over, and Steele knocked home another insurance run in the eighth.

Cooper finished with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks during his 7.0 innings of work.  Buckey pitched a scoreless ninth to post his second save of the season.

Kyle Colgain was the starting and losing pitcher for Denison.
