Ohio Wesleyan 9, Wooster 5
Junior midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) scored 3 goals during the first half, with 2 coming during the closing minutes, to help Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Saturday in Wooster.
Schnell put the Bishops on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal just over 5 minutes into the game, and sophomore attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) followed with a goal less than a minute later for a 2-0 Bishop lead.
That was how the first quarter ended, but Ohio Wesleyan wasted little time adding to its lead in the second period, with junior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) finding the back of the net just 35 seconds into the quarter.
Wooster answered with a goal from P.J. Dallman, and when Matt Ranck scored midway through the period, the Scots had pulled to within 3-2.
The tide turned when senior attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) notched a man-down goal, courtesy of a Schnell feed, with 4:07 left in the half, and Schnell then followed with a pair of scores, the second coming with just 5 ticks on the clock, to give the Bishops a 6-2 lead at the break.
Short and Schnell added third-period scores to extend the Bishop lead to 8-3, and sophomore midfielder Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) wrapped up the Bishop scoring with a goal midway through the fourth quarter.
Schnell led the Bishops with 4 goals and an assist, while Short finished with 2 goals and an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) went the distance in the Bishop crease, finishing with 9 saves.
Dallman and Harry Kemp scored twice apiece for Wooster. Matt Magoon and Ben Grombala combined for 14 saves in the Wooster goal.
