Buffalo State Rallies Past Women's Basketball

Senior guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) hit a lay-in to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead as the Bishops erased a 12-point second-half deficit, and junior post Emily Julius (Avon) scored for a 63-62 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 1:22 to play, but Buffalo State scored the final 4 points of the game to win the championship game of the Betty Abgott Invitational, hosted by Buffalo State on Sunday in Buffalo, N.Y.

Buffalo State broke a 33-33 tie with a 12-1 run early in the second half.  Olivia Luciani hit a pair of 3-pointers, Hillary Kollar added a 3-pointer, and Brittnee Perry converted a 3-point play to give the Bengals a 45-34 lead with 16:34 left in regulation time.  The Bengals increased the lead to 47-35 on Jordan Yastremski's lay-in with 15:08 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan still trailed, 56-47, with 8:46 left when baskets by Julius, junior guard Kelly Still (New Orleans, La./St. Martin's), and sophomore post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore/Liberty Union) brought the Bishops within 56-53, and a Julius 3-point play and a free throw by senior post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) made it a 58-57 game with 5:19 left.

Buckets by Julius and McQuade gave the Bishops a 61-60 lead with 2:09 left, and after Keyonte Edwards scored to end a 3-minute Buffalo State scoreless spell, it was Julius with a lay-in for a 63-62 Bishop lead with 1:22 to play.

Edwards answered with a lay-in to give the Bengals a 64-63 lead with 1:07 left, and after sophomore guard Megan Kuether (Osgood/Marion Local) missed a 3-pointer, Perry hit a pair of free throws to give the Bengals a 66-63 lead with :06 to play.

Senior guard Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) had a look at a game-tying 3-pointer, but her shot was off the mark with :03 remaining.

McQuade led the Bishops with 18 points and 4 assists.  She went 12-for-18 from the free throw line, with the 18 attempts breaking the school record of 17 set by Jessica Viertlboeck against Allegheny on Jan. 20, 2001, and equaled by Katie Hamilton at Denison on Feb. 27, 2009.

Dickson finished with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.  Julius added 10 points and McRae grabbed 10 rebounds.

Perry led Buffalo State with 15 points.

McQuade and Dickson represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
