Ohio Wesleyan 63, Oberlin 57
Junior post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) tallied 5 points during a 9-0 second-half run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and added a pair of timely hoops down the stretch to help the Bishops hold off Oberlin and record a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Oberlin.
Leading, 16-15, at the midway point of the first half, the Bishops would allow the Yeowomen just 2 baskets through the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, McRae sank a pair of free throws, then followed with a jumper and a lay-in to kick off a 16-4 run. Freshman guard Megan Kuether (Osgood/Marion Local) and senior wing Julia Grimsley (Alliance) added 3-pointers along the way, helping the Bishops to a 32-19 lead at the break.
Held below 25 percent shooting from the field during the first half, the Yeowomen got hot quickly to open the second period, with Malisa Hoak, Christina Marquette, and Lillian Jahan hitting 3-pointers. Lindsey Bernhardt's fast-break lay-in capped a 13-0 Oberlin run and tied the game at 32 with 14:20 left in regulation time.
McRae answered with a lay-in off a Kuether feed, and after a hoop by freshman post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore/Liberty Union), it was McRae with a lay-in and a free throw before a hoop by junior post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) gave the Bishops a 41-32 lead with 10:41 to play.
The Yeowomen rallied to within 52-48 on a 3-point play by Jahan with 3:02 left, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with buckets from sophomore guard Hanna Fedorka (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) and McRae to pushe the lead back 8 points.
Jahan once again brought Oberlin within 4 points, this time with a 3-pointer with :21 left, but sophomore post Emily Julius (Avon) hit a pair of free throws to slam the door on the Yeowomen comeback.
McRae led the Bishops with 21 points, a single marker short of her career best. Dickson grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds and junior guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) collected 5 assists.
Jahan led Oberlin with 25 points.
