Ohio Wesleyan 81, Oberlin 72

Junior post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) scored 6 points, freshman post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore/Liberty Union) added 5 more, and junior post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) scored 4 to spark an 18-2 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops went on to defeat Oberlin in a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan, the tournament's No. 2 seed, advances to face third-seeded Denison in the tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. on Friday at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., followed by top-seeded DePauw against fourth-seeded Kenyon at 8 p.m.  The semifinal winners will square off in the championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday at DePauw.

The Yeowomen raced to an 8-0 lead behind 3-pointers by Lindsey Bernhardt and Lillian Jahan and a lay-in from Christina Marquette.

McRae put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a jumper at the 16:49 mark, then followed with a fast-break lay-in.  Henning and Dickson followed with 3-pointers before another Dickson hoop gave the Bishops a 12-8 lead with 14:07 left in the half.

Another Henning 3-pointer and a 3-point play by sophomore post Emily Julius (Avon) extended the Bishop lead to 18-10.

Bernhardt's bucket with 11:41 to play brought Oberlin within 18-12, and the Yeowomen narrowed the gap to 24-20 on Jahan's lay-in with 7:52 remaining in the half.  Oberlin would trail by 6 at the break thanks to Bernhardt's buzzer-beating 3-pointer, and the Yeowomen were still within 6 after a pair of Christina Marquette free throws made it 40-34 with 18:25 to play in the contest.

The Bishops threatened to put the game out of reach with a 9-1 burst that included baskets by sophomore guard Hanna Fedorka (North Canton/Massillon Jackson), Julius, and Dickson, and the Bishops still held a 71-58 lead on McRae's basket with 4:31 to play.

Oberlin rallied with a Malisa Hoak basket and a Jahan 3-pointer, and after Julius split a pair of free throws with 2:04 to go, the Yeowomen got a pair of Bernhardt free throws and another Jahan 3-pointer to close within 74-68 with :40 remaining.

Junior guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman), senior post Tamra Londot (Utica), and Julius each went 1-for-2 from the stripe to counter a pair of Marquette free throws, and after a Bernhardt jumper brought the Yeowomen within 77-72 with :20 left, it was Henning and freshman guard Megan Kuether (Osgood/Marion Local) each hitting a pair of free throws to slam the door on the Oberlin comeback.

McRae led the Bishops with a career-high 24 points, going 11-for-12 from the field.  Julius finished with 16 points and Henning added 10 points.  Londot had a team-high 9 rebounds, and McQuade and Kuether had 3 assists apiece.

Bernhardt had 23 points for Oberlin, while Marquette compiled 21 points and 17 rebounds.
