Junior attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) scored twice as Ohio Wesleyan ended the third quarter with a 4-0 run and went on to defeat Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday in Hampden-Sydney, Va.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 5-4 halftime lead on a score by junior midfielder Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) during the final minute of the first half, but the Tigers got a goal from Duncan Morris during the opening minute of the second half to even the game at 5.
Senior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) gave the Bishops the lead with a man-up goal at the 3:49 mark of the third quarter, kicking off a Bishop run of 4 goals to end the period.
Umbach added a goal courtesy of a feed from senior midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) with 2:01 remaining, then it was Foster again at the 1:06 mark before Umbach beat the third-quarter horn with a score that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 9-5 lead.
The Tigers ended that run with a James Hughes goal early in the fourth period, but Ohio Wesleyan had an answer as Foster set up junior attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) on a goal, then assisted Umbach on another goal in the closing minutes.
Hampden-Sydney had taken a 1-0 lead on Thomas Armstrong's goal at the 10:51 mark of the first quarter, but Helms responded with a goal just 40 seconds later, followed by scores from Umbach and Minkler that gave the Bishops a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers rallied behind a pair of goals from Armstrong and another by Jake Koferl to knot the game at 4 before Foster's goal provided a 5-4 Bishop lead at the break.
Umbach led the Bishops with 5 goals, while Foster finished with 2 goals and 3 assists and Helms added 2 goals and 2 assists. Junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) recorded 9 saves.
