Junior attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) scored to even the game at 6-6 late in the third quarter, but seventh-ranked Washington countered with a 4-1 run and survived a pair of fourth-quarter man-down opportunities to take a non-conference win from Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
Ohio Wesleyan had trailed, 4-1, midway through the second quarter when the Bishops finished off the first half with a 3-0 run. Umbach found junior midfielder Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) for a goal at the 8:52 mark, then Foster paid it forward by setting up junior attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) on a goal that made it 4-3 with 5:36 to go.
Umbach tied the game with a goal with 3:28 left in the half, with senior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) credited with an assist on the play.
The teams traded goals twice during the third period, first with Washington's Jim Cusick scoring in the first minute of the quarter and senior midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) answering for Ohio Wesleyan, and then with J.D. Campbell scoring for Washington and Umbach responding with a goal to tie the game at 6-6.
Washington took the lead on Grant Hughes' goal with :42 left in the third period, then Michael Trapp won the opening face-off of the fourth quarter, stormed upfield, and scored to give the Shoremen an 8-6 advantage with 14:54 remaining in regulation time.
Minkler brought the Bishops within 8-7 with a goal at the 11:14 mark, but Washington answered with scores by Hunter Nowicki and Jim Cusick to make it a 10-7 game with just over 5 minutes to play.
Ohio Wesleyan got an opportunity when Washington's Gavin Shuart was assessed a 2-minute, non-releaseable penalty with 3:02 left. Helms scored on the ensuing man-up opportunity to bring the hosts within 10-8 with 90 seconds still remaining in the man-up situtation, but the Shoremen got the ball on the ensuing face-off and were able to kill the rest of the penalty.
The Bishops had one more man-up chance when Brad Wollman was called for a cross check with :28 left, but Ohio Wesleyan could not convert the chance into a goal.
Umbach and Schnell finished with 2 goals and an assist apiece, while Minkler scored twice. Junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) finished with 18 saves.
Nowicki led Washington with 2 goals and 2 assists. Ted DiSalvo had 9 saves for the Shoremen.
