Junior attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) scored to break a 1-1 tie and kick off a 4-1 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a win over Oberlin in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Oberlin.
Freshman midfielder Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.) staked the Bishops to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first minute of the game, but Oberlin answered with a score by Connor Jackson at the 10:08 mark of the first quarter.
Umbach's goal midway through the period put the Bishops ahead to stay, and junior midfielder Brendan Bouchard (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) followed with a man-up goal, courtesy of a feed from junior midfielder Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)), for a 3-1 Bishop lead.
Junior attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) opened the second-quarter scoring, also off a Foster assist, for a 4-1 Bishop lead.
The Yeomen closed to within 4-2 when Jackson found Alex Wright for a score, but Umbach responded with a goal with 4:09 left in the half to give Ohio Wesleyan a 5-2 advantage.
Senior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) scored twice during the third quarter, offsetting Oberlin goals by Jackson and Eric Hager, and Bouchard and Helms opened the fourth quarter with goals to extend the Bishop lead to 9-4.
Helms led the Bishops with 3 goals and an assist, while Umbach finished with 2 goals and an assist. Junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) was credited with 13 saves.
Jackson led Oberlin with 2 goals an an assist. Erickson Andrews had 15 saves for the Yeomen.
