Box Score Denison 14, Ohio Wesleyan 5Junior attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) and junior attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) scored goals to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 4-2, but fourth-ranked Denison went on a 6-0 run and went on to defeat the Bishops in the championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday in Granville.
The Big Red built a 3-0 lead with the help of a pair of Eddie Vita goals, the latter with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
Umbach's buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter brought the Bishops within 3-1, and after Vita scored early in the second quarter, Minkler answered with a goal to bring the Bishops within 4-2 with 9:21 left in the period.
Denison got goals from Luke Walsh and Blair Farinholt to take a 6-2 lead at the intermission, and opened the thired quarter with a score from Chapin Speidel and 3 straight goals by Walsh to extend the lead to 10-2.
Ohio Wesleyan rallied with a goal from junior midfielder Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) late in the third, and opened the fourth quarter with another Umbach goal to pull within 10-4, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Minkler led the Bishops with 2 goals and an assist, while Umbach scored 2 goals. Junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) was credited with 11 saves.
Walsh led Denison with 5 goals and an assist. Clark Bullington made 13 saves in the Denison crease.
