Schnell Sparks Men's Lacrosse Past DePauw

Senior midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) collected 2 goals and an assist as Ohio Wesleyan built a 6-0 first-quarter lead and went on to record a North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw on Wednesday in Greencastle, Ind.

Senior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) put the Bishops on the scoreboard just over a minute into the game, and Schnell followed with a goal just over a minute after that for a quick 2-0 Bishop lead.

Freshman midfielder Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.) followed with a goal at the 10:59 mark, and Schnell scored a man-up goal courtesy of an assist from junior attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) just 57 seconds later before finding Maier for a goal just 30 seconds after that to increase the Bishop lead to 5-0.

Sophomore midfielder George Rice (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin) wrapped up the first-quarter scoring with a goal during the final minute of the period.

DePauw opened the second-quarter scoring with a goal from A.J. Schlaff to pull within 6-1.

The Bishops then erupted for 4 goals in a span of 69 seconds, with Umbach scoring 3 times during that stretch and junior midfielder Sam Gioseffi (Harrison, N.Y.) winning the ensuing face-off and heading right upfield to score, giving the Bishops a 10-1 advantage.

Sophomore attacker Bud Graham (Chestertown, Ontario/Culver (Ind.) Academy) tallied twice during the second half for Ohio Wesleyan.

Umbach led the Bishops with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Helms, Schnell, and Graham each contributed 2 goals and an assist.  Junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) and freshman Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) each made 6 saves in one half of action in goal.

Schlaff and Robert Lapp scored for DePauw.  Tom Kryspin was credited with 28 saves in the Tiger cage.
