DELAWARE, Ohio – Wisconsin-Whitewater took over the top spot in the team standings with 20.5 points through seven events after the second of three days at the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship from Selby Stadium and the George Gauthier Track on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Warhawks' eight points on Friday came in the shot put where junior Shelby Mahr placed second with a mark of 49-7. That performance was second only to Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Jecel Klotz, who won the national title with a toss of 50-8. Concordia-Moorhead junior Cherae Reeves was third (48-10¼), while the 2013 national runner-up, Kayla Hemann of Wartburg, placed fourth (47-5¼).
Wisconsin-Oshkosh sits just 1.5 points behind Whitewater, while Wisconsin-Stout (15), Williams (14) and Amherst (11) round out the top-five spots in the team standings.
In the heptathlon, Carleton sophomore Amelia Campbell won the national championship after compiling 5221 points, 23 tallies shy of the national record. Wisconsin-Stout senior Jessika Smith placed second in the event with 5170 points. Defending national champion Elizabeth Krug of Hendrix took third. The senior compiled 5074 points in the seven events.
Misericordia senior Ashlee Ward, the 2014 indoor high jump national champion, won the outdoor high jump title after successfully clearing 5-9¼. Worchester Polytechnic Institute senior Julie Eagle also cleared 5-9¼, but Ward took home the national crown via tiebreaker. Junior Taylor Hudson (Cortland State), sophomore Melanie Winters (Baldwin Wallace) and sophomore Kasey Ederer (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, after clearing 5-8.
In preliminary action on Friday, Wisconsin-La Crosse junior Jaime Ludwigson posted the lone sub-14-second time (:13.99) to win the second heat of the 100 hurdles. Kenyon senior Sierra DeLeon (:14.05) and Worcester State senior Christy Deininger (:14.10) won the other two heats.
Wisconsin-Whitewater junior Lexie Sondgeroth, national runner-up in this year's long jump, won the third heat of the 400-meter dash with a time of :54.51. Massachusetts-Boston sophomore Hulerie McGuffie (:55.76) and Vassar junior Heather Ingraham (:55.87) won the other two heats of the 400 dash.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Carly Fehler paced the 100-meter dash field with a time of 11.86 in the first heat. Central sophomore Abigail Davis, who qualified for the finals of the 200 on Thursday, won the second heat with a time of 11.89. Wartburg's Libbey Schubert won heat three with a time of 11.92. On Thursday, Schubert also qualified in the 200 dash and as a member of the 4x100 relay.
In the final prelim of the evening, the Wisconsin-Oshkosh duo of senior Christy Cazzola (2:08.39) and junior Kylee Verhasselt (2:09.69) won two of the three heats of the 800-meter run. Johns Hopkins senior Maggie Shelton won the third heat after crossing the finish line in 2:11.44.
NCAA Division III championship action wraps up on Saturday. Field events are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m., while the first running event is slated to start at 1 p.m. (Eastern).
