Box Score
Ohio Wesleyan 9, Denison 8

Senior attacker John Umbach (Montclair, N.J.) scored with :19 left in regulation time, and fourth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan withstood a man-down situation in the closing seconds to defeat 18th-ranked Denison in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Sunday at Selby Stadium.

With the score tied at 8, Denison's Ben Hearn was called for tripping with :53 left in regulation time, giving the Bishops a man-up opportunity.  Junior attacker Marcus Dietz (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) found Umbach on the left side of the Big Red goal, and Umbach got a shot past Denison keeper Clark Bullington to give the Bishops the lead.

Denison won the ensuing face-off on a violation, and junior defenseman John Griffin (Oceanside, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon (Mass.)) was assessed a delay of game penalty on the play, giving the Big Red a man-up situation with :14 to play.  Denison's James Meager saw his pass go awry in front of the crease, however, and senior defenseman Steve Barnett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) picked up the loose ball to seal the victory.

Senior midfielder Brendan Bouchard (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) put the Bishops on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game.

Will Donohue scored midway through the first quarter to even the game for Denison, but senior midfielder Sam Gioseffi (Harrison, N.Y.) won the opening face-off, raced to the Big Red goal, and bounced a shot past Bullington to restore the lead to Ohio Wesleyan just 7 seconds later.

Donohue would strike again later in the period to tie the game at 2-2.

The second quarter was all Ohio Wesleyan, with Umbach giving the Bishops the lead at the 11:02 mark, senior attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) and sophomore midfielder Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.) scoring goals just 33 seconds apart midway through the period, and Minkler tallying a man-up goal with 3:44 left in the half as Ohio Wesleyan took a 6-2 lead at the intermission.

Denison rallied in the third quarter, with Donohue and Meager scoring goals less than a minute apart to close the deficit to 6-4.

Freshman midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) answered with a goal just 29 seconds later for a 7-4 Bishop lead, but a goal by Nick Caravana and a man-up score by Blair Farinholt brought the visitors within 7-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Farinholt scored a 2-man-up goal early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

Bouchard scored off a pass from Leyden for an 8-7 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 11:34 left in regulation time, but the Big Red responded with a goal by Nick Bortolani with 4:20 to play.

Umbach, Bouchard, and Minkler scored 2 goals apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.  Senior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) recorded 14 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.
