at Corbiere-Merion Invitational
Freshman Ty Mansfield (Columbus/Bexley) won an event, set a pool record, and helped a pair of relay teams to wins for Ohio Wesleyan during the first day of the Corbiere-Merion Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at the Meek Center.
Davis & Elkins was leading the meet with 618 points to 616 for Ohio Wesleyan. Wilmington was in third place with 366½ points, followed by Urbana (242), Notre Dame (223), and Manchester (181½).
Mansfield won the 100 butterfly in :58.59, breaking the pool record of :59.21 set by Jessica Ward in 2013 and finishing just 1/100 of a second off the school record. Mansfield also finished second in the 100 freestyle, missing the school record by 3/100 of a second. The Bishops opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, with Mansfield joining forces with sophomore Alicia Margello (Powell/Bishop Watterson), freshman Liz Mayio (Bethesda, Md./The Siena School), and sophomore Beth Ward (Delaware/Hayes) to touch in 1:51.23, missing the school record by 1/100 of a second. Mansfield, junior Grace Bulchik (Lakewood), senior Anne Edwards (Golf, Ill./Glenbrook South), and Ward combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:44.13.
Edwards and sophomore Shannon Bermingham (Orchard Park, N.Y.) also won events for Ohio Wesleyan. Edwards won the 500 freestyle in 5:17.65 and finished third in the 200 butterfly, while Bermingham won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.94 and placed second in the 200 breaststroke.
Other standouts for the Bishops included Mayio, who was second in the 100 and 200 butterfly events; Ward, who finished second in the 100 and 200 backstroke events; Margello, who placed second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 breaststroke; freshman Maddie Penn (Columbus/Bishop Watterson), who finished third in the 100 and 200 backstroke events; Bulchik, who placed third in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle; sophomore Allie Niemeyer (Oregon, Wis./Stoughton), who was fourth in the 500 freestyle; senior Kate West (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn), who finished fifth in the 200 IM; and senior Emma Beale (Maumee/Home), who was sixth in the 200 breaststroke.
The Bishop 800 freestyle relay team of Niemeyer, Bulchik, Bermingham, and Edwards finished third.
The Corbiere/Merion Invitational resumes on Sunday, with Sunday's session starting at 10 a.m.
The Corbiere/Merion Invitational honors the memory of Payson Corbiere '96 and T'ai Merion '96, who were members of the Ohio Wesleyan men's swimming team.
