Junior wing Trischa Lacy (Urbana) scored to tie the game at 44 as Ohio Wesleyan erased a 10-point deficit, but Ohio Christian pulled away in the fourth quarter and went on to take a non-conference win over the Bishops on Monday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Trailblazers raced to a 5-0 lead on an Erinn Bailey lay-in and a Shawntell Parsons 3-pointer less than a minute into the game, and the visitors would build a 15-7 lead on Paige Lewis' lay-in at the 4:11 mark of the first quarter.
Lacy buried a 3-pointer and junior guard Kayla Richard (Minster) followed with a hoop to bring the Bishops within 15-12, and when senior guard Megan Kuether (Osgood/Marion Local) connected on a 3-pointer later in the quarter, Ohio Wesleyan had narrowed the margin to 17-16.
Another Lacy 3-pointer made it a 25-22 game early in the second quarter, but the Trailblazers got 3 free throws from Kaylee Dickson and another Parsons 3-pointer to open up a 33-23 lead midway through the period.
Trifectas by senior post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore/Liberty Union) and Kuether rallied Ohio Wesleyan to within 41-39 in the final minute of the half, and the Bishops scored the first 5 points of the second half on a Kuether jumper from the lane, a free throw by freshman wing Claire Sterling (West Jefferson), and a Lacy lay-in to knot the score at 44.
The game was tied at 53 in the closing minutes of the third quarter when Ohio Christian took the lead for good on a Lewis 3-pointer.
Lacy buried a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to bring the Bishops within 60-59, and another Lacy bomb made it 64-62 with 7:18 left in regulation time.
Lewis then broke the game open for the Trailblazers, erupting for a jumper, a 3-pointer, and a steal and lay-in to extend the lead to 71-62, and Ohio Christian opened up a 10-point lead on Bailey's lay-in with 4:12 remaining.
The Ohio Wesleyan defense would keep the Trailblazers from scoring for the remainder of the game, and junior wing Nicole Gorka (Parma) hit a free throw and a putback basket for the Bishops down the stretch.
Kuether led the Bishops with 22 points, while Lacy finished with 20 points. Taylor Dickson grabbed a team-leading 9 rebounds.
Bailey led Ohio Christian with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
