Box Score
Ohio Wesleyan 18, Augustana 2

Senior attacker Marcus Dietz (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) scored the first 3 goals of the game for 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan, and the Battling Bishops pulled away by outscoring Augustana, 8-0, during the third quarter on the way to a win in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Selby Stadium.

Dietz put the Bishops on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal just over a minute into the game, then added goals just over a minute apart midway through the period to extend the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 3-0.

Sophomore defenseman Trent Schulte (Coronado, Calif.), junior attacker Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.), and junior midfielder Derek Todd (Edina, Minn.) added second-quarter goals as the Bishops took a 6-0 lead.

The Vikings came back with a goal by Scott Davis during the final minute of the half to pull within 6-1 at the intermission.

Sophomore midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) got that goal back early in the third quarter, and Dietz found Maier for another goal just 21 seconds later.  Maier paid it forward by setting up freshman attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) on a goal less than a minute after that, and Maier scored again midway through the quarter.

Ohio Wesleyan slammed the door with 4 consecutive man-up goals during the second half of the period, with Schulte finding the back of the net twice, Tennant once, and freshman midfielder Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) closing out the 8-0 Bishop run with a goal at the 1:22 mark of the quarter.

Maier led the Bishops with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Dietz finished with 3 goals and 2 assists.  Schulte scored 3 goals, setting a school record for goals scored in a game by a long-stick player and tying the school mark for points in a game by a long-stick player.  Junior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) had 9 saves during the first 49-plus minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.  Sophomore Xander Pacilio (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) and freshman Jameson Hill (Wilton, Conn.) combined for 1 save during the final 10 minutes.

Davis and Kevin Gleason scored goals for Augustana.  Jack Peters had 17 saves during the first 52-plus minutes for the Vikings, and Jeremiah Heredia and Brad Dodge combined for 3 saves during the remaining 8 minutes.
