Sophomore midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) scored to tie the game at 12 and send matters into overtime, but second-ranked Salisbury scored midway through the first overtime period to edge ninth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday in Bethesda, Md.

The Sea Gulls had taken a 12-11 lead on a goal by Garrett Reynolds midway through the fourth quarter.

Leyden tallied an unassisted goal with 1:20 left in regulation time to even the score at 12.

Salisbury's Nathan Blondino had an open look at the Bishop goal from about 10 yards in the closing seconds of regulation time, but senior defenseman Ben Danieli (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) dove and blocked the shot to preserve the tie.

During the overtime period, sophomore defenseman Trent Schulte (Coronado, Calif.) was called for a slash and Salisbury took advantage of the ensuing man-up opportunity, with James Burton finding Thomas Cirillo for the game-winner with 1:50 left in the extra session.

Brendan Bromwell scored just over a minute into the game to give Salisbury an early lead, but Ohio Wesleyan stormed back with goals from junior attacker Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.), senior attacker Marcus Dietz (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales), and Leyden to take a 3-1 advantage.  The Sea Gulls responded with scores by Nick Garbarino and Burton to tie the game at 3-3.

Maier's man-up goal early in the second quarter gave the Bishops a 4-3 lead, but the Sea Gulls scored the next 3 goals, getting scores from Carson Kalama, Christian Ottenritte, and Cirillo.  Ohio Wesleyan countered with scores by freshman attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Leyden to tie the game at 6-6.

Salisbury took the lead with goals by Bromwell and Andrew Ternahan just 9 seconds apart before Tennant scored a man-up goal to bring the Bishops within 8-7 at halftime.

Cirillo extended the Salisbury lead to 9-7 with a goal during the opening minute of the third quarter, but Ohio Wesleyan once again came back, with freshman midfielder Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J.) and Leyden scoring for a 9-9 deadlock midway through the period.

Goals by Garbarino and Kalama put Salisbury up, 11-9, early in the fourth quarter.

Harvey scored less than a minute later to make it 11-10, and Leyden followed with a goal less than a minute after that, tying the game at 11 and setting up the thrilling conclusion.

Leyden led the Bishops with 5 goals, while Maier, Harvey, and Tennant scored 2 goals apiece.  Junior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) went the distance in the Bishop crease and finished with 14 saves.

Cirillo scored 3 goals for Salisbury.  Joshua Dean and Anthony Stavrakis combined for 3 saves in the Sea Gull crease.
