The 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan men's lacrosse team assembled first-half runs of 8-1 and 7-0 on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw on Tuesday at Selby Stadium.
Junior midfielder Derek Todd (Edina, Minn.) got the Bishops on the board at the 14:41 mark of the first quarter thanks to an assist from junior attacker Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.).
Ohio Wesleyan then scored 3 goals in a row, 2 by freshman attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and one by sophomore defender Trent Schulte (Coronado, Calif.) to make it a 4-0 lead.
DePauw scored a goal with a Ben Sherman goal, but the Bishops would get goals from freshman midfielder Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and senior midfielder Zach Friedman (Libertyville, Ill.) during the final minute of the first quarter to extend their lead to 6-1.
The first of Ohio Wesleyan's 9 second-quarter goals belonged to senior midfielder George Rice (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin). Maier would follow with a goal of his own off a spin move that put the score at 8-1.
DePauw would answer with a goal of its own but the Bishops scored 7 consecutive goals from that point to give them a 15-2 halftime lead. Tennant had 3 of the 7 goals scored during that span.
The Tigers' Sherman opened the scoring in the second half but the Bishops answered 2 minutes later with a goal from freshman midfielder Drew Gouhin (Olentangy/Liberty).
Freshman attackers Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), Conor Caffrey (Scituate, Mass./Brewster Academy), and Chris Azzarello (Pennington, N.J./Princeton Day School) each recorded a goal to push the Bishop lead to 19-3 with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter.
After both teams traded goals at the end of the third quarter, the Bishops outscored the Tigers, 3-2, in the fourth to give them the 22-5 victory.
Tennant led the Bishops with 5 goals and 1 assist, followed by Jeschke with 2 goals and senior attacker Marcus Dietz (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) with 2 goals.
Junior goalie Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) started in the net for the Bishops and recorded 2 saves. Freshman goalie Jameson Hill (Wilton, Conn.) and sophomore goalie Xander Pacilio (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) both shared time in the second half and recorded 1 save each.
Sherman led DePauw with 2 goals and Connor Patterson recorded 19 saves for the Tigers.
