Freshman attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored 4 goals to lead 15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan over Kenyon in a semifinal matchup of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
With the win, Ohio Wesleyan advances to the NCAC tournament championship game against Denison, to be held on Saturday, April 30, in Granville. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Ohio Wesleyan and Denison will meet in the tournament championship game.
Tennant got things going in the first quarter with a goal at the 8:53 mark and sophomore midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) wrapped around the back of the net for a diving goal with just 7 seconds left in the quarter to give Ohio Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Tennant poured in his second goal of the game off an assist from senior attacker Marcus Dietz (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) to put the Bishops ahead 3-0.
Kenyon's Emilio Sosa answered with a man-up goal off an assist from Jonah Florence to get the Lords on the board with 9:51 left in the first half.
Dietz then used a fancy move, faking a pass, causing Kenyon goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson to jump in the air, then ripping a shot under the Kenyon goalie for a score to make it 4-1.
Kenyon would get consecutive goals from Chris Ferraro and Robert Jacobs to bring the score to 4-3 at halftime.
Tennant got things going once again at the beginning of the third quarter with a goal off an assist from Hamblett, and Deitz found the back of the net for a score off a pass from freshman attacker Conor Caffrey (Scituate, Mass./Brewster (N.H.) Academy) as the Bishops extended their lead to 6-3 at the 2:28 mark in the third.
Sosa scored Kenyon's fourth and final goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter to reduce the Bishop lead to 6-4.
However, junior midfielder Derek Todd (Edina, Minn.) scored a diving goal and Tennant converted on his fourth goal of the game to seal the Bishops' victory.
Tennant led Ohio Wesleyan with 4 goals, followed by Dietz with 2 goals and 1 assist. Junior goalie Ben Rigger (Decatur, GA) went the distance for the Bishops in goal and recorded 10 saves.
The Lords were paced by Sosa with 2 goals and Jacobs and Ferraro with 1 goal apiece. Shevelson made 16 saves in the net for Kenyon.
