Ohio Wesleyan 76, Allegheny 62

Senior guard Megan Kuether (Osgood/Marion Local) had 4 points to highlight a 20-5 second quarter that helped Ohio Wesleyan pull away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Freshman wing Nicole Popovich (Rocky River) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer just 8 seconds into the game, and freshman post Elea Karras (Bellbrook/Miami Valley) added a 3-point play, Sterling added a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer, and Popovich scored on a fast-break lay-in.  When Kuether followed with a lay-in and Karras added a pair of free throws, the Bishops were ahead, 19-8, with 4:20 left in the first quarter.

Allegheny closed to within 21-15 as Olivia Barkley had a jumper and a free throw, and the Gators trailed, 27-18, after the first quarter.

Kuether opened the second quarter with a lay-in and senior post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore/Liberty Union) followed with a 3-point play to stretch the margin to 32-18, and the Bishops would go on a 12-2 run later in the quarter, with Keuther sinking a pair of free throws, sophomore guard Erin Delaney (Toledo/Notre Dame Academy) adding a bucket and a free throw, Karras burying a 3-pointer, and junior guard Hallie Sinko (Copley/Archbishop Hoban) and Popovich contributing hoops to make it 44-22.  Freshman wing Claire Sterling (West Jefferson) closed out the half with a 3-pointer to give the Bishops a 47-23 lead at the intermission.

The Gators rallied during the fourth quarter, with Emily Smith hitting a pair of 3-pointers and a lay-in to help narrow the gap to 72-61 with just under a minute to play, but that was as close as Allegheny would come.

Kuether led the Bishops with 13 points and 4 assists.  Popovich scored 12 points, Dickson finished with 11 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, and Sterling and Karras finished with 10 points apiece.

Smith led Allegheny with 14 points.
