Ohio Wesleyan 59, Oberlin 57

Freshman wing Nicole Popovich (Rocky River) scored with 1:03 left in regulation time to break a 57-57 tie, and Ohio Wesleyan withstood a pair of potential go-ahead possessions to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Saturday in Oberlin.

The Yeowomen had tied the game at 57 on Abby Andrews' lay-in with 1:19 remaining, but Popovich answered with a lay-in on the other end to give the Bishops the lead.

Oberlin's Tyler Parlor missed a pair of free throws with :41 to play, but Alex Stipano grabbed the rebound of the second shot, giving the Yeowomen a chance to take the lead.  Sarah Thompson misfired on a 3-pointer with :27 left and freshman wing Claire Sterling (West Jefferson) cleared the rebound for the Bishops.

On the other end, Popovich broke free for a lay-in, but her shot didn't fall, and Ally Driscoll got the rebound for Oberlin with :14 to play.

Parlor got to the basket in the closing seconds but missed a lay-in, and Olivia Canning got the rebound for Oberlin and was fouled with :01.3 remaining.  Canning missed the first throw, then missed the second deliberately to give the Yeowomen a final chance, but senior post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore/Liberty Union) secured the rebound to seal the win.

After a first quarter in which neither team would lead by more than 4 points, the Bishops opened up a 26-19 lead on a Dickson 3-pointer, then scored the final 7 points of the half on a Dickson 3-pointer and a pair of free throws and a lay-in from senior guard Megan Kuether (Osgood/Marion Local).

When Popovich drove for a lay-in to open the second-half scoring, the Bishops were up by a score of 37-27.

Oberlin scored the next 16 points of the game to take the lead, with Parlor and Canning combining for 11 points and Maggie Gross converting a 3-point play to finish off the run and give the Yeowomen a 43-37 lead.

Freshman post Elea Karras (Bellbrook/Miami Valley) opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and Popovich followed with a jumper from the lane to tie the game at 49, and it would remain a one-possession game for most of the remainder of the contest.

Kuether led the Bishops with 17 points, while Karras finished with 14 and Popovich added 10.  Sterling led the Bishops with 8 rebounds and Dickson had a team-high 3 assists.

Parlor led Oberlin with 16 points.
