Denison 12, Ohio Wesleyan 8
Junior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) scored 4 goals as 19th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan built a 7-1 lead midway through the second quarter, but ninth-ranked Denison went on an 11-0 run and went on to record a North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Bishops on Sunday at Selby Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.) put the Bishops on the scoreboard less than 2 minutes into the game, and back-to-back goals by Leyden made it 3-0 midway through the first period.
Liam Rooney scored for Denison at the 6:22 mark of the quarter, but Jamieson answered with a goal before sophomore attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) scored with :25 left in the quarter and Leyden beat the first-quarter horn, finding the back of the net with :00.3 on the clock, to stretch the Bishop lead to 6-1.
Leyden's goal with 8:29 left in the first half gave Ohio Wesleyan a 7-1 lead.
Denison closed to within 7-3 at the half on scores by Spencer Butler and Ben Duhoski.
The Big Red pulled closer with a goal by Wills Hutris during the opening minute of the second half before scores from Butler and Brooks Davy just 38 seconds apart made it 7-6. Jake Waxter tied the game at 7 midway through the third period, and Butler and Rooney tallied goals less than a minute apart for a 9-7 Denison lead. Owen Armstrong scored with :10 left in the quarter, closing out a third period that saw the Big Red outshoot the Bishops, 19-1.
Ohio Wesleyan fought back during the fourth quarter, outshooting Denison, 13-4, but senior attacker Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.) was the only Bishop to find the back of the Big Red net during the period.
Leyden led the Bishops with 4 goals. Freshman Andrew Halmi (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) started in the Ohio Wesleyan goal and made 5 saves, and freshman Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.) had 2 saves during the second half.
Butler had 4 goals and Rooney finished with 2 goals and 3 assists for Denison. Stephen Paras recorded 5 saves for the Big Red.
