Ohio Wesleyan 18, Otterbein 6
Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) had 2 goals and 2 assists and junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) added 2 goals and an assist at Ohio Wesleyan built an 11-2 halftime lead and went on to defeat Otterbein in non-conference play on Wednesday in Westerville.
The Bishops raced to a 4-0 lead, finding the back of the Cardinal net twice in the opening minute of play.
Senior midfielder Trent Schulte (Coronado, Calif.) picked up the opening face-off, sprinted to the goal, and scored just 7 seconds into the action, and Hildebrand took a pass from sophomore midfielder Lucas Smith (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) and scored at the 14:11 mark of the period.
Junior midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.) and senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) added scores as the Bishops took a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Otterbein rallied with a pair of goals by Xander Seal, the former a man-up goal, but Jamieson beat the first-quarter horn with a shot to make it 5-2, and the Bishop defense would hold the Cardinals off the scoreboard throughout the second quarter. Meanwhile, Tennant scored twice, once off a Hildebrand assist, then returned the favor by setting up Hildebrand on a goal with 5:54 left in the half. Less than 30 seconds later, senior midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) added a goal, and Hildebrand set up a man-up goal by freshman attacker Will Anton (Madison, N.J.) to close out the first-half scoring.
Tennant and Hildebrand each would score once in the third quarter, which ended with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 15-5 lead.
Hildebrand led the Bishops with 3 goals and 4 assists, while Tennant finished with 3 goals and an assist. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) stopped 4 shots during the first 3 quarters in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, sophomore Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.), made 2 saves in 10-plus minutes of action, and freshman Zach Brasser (Westport, Conn./Millbrook (N.Y.) School) finished the game.
Seal and Connor Dziewit each had 2 goals for the Cardinals. Matt Niemi was credited with 9 saves.
