Junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored early in the first overtime period to give Ohio Wesleyan a non-conference win over Messiah on Saturday in McMurray, Pa.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 10-8 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) with 9:15 left in regulation time.
The Falcons rallied with goals by Liam Lilienthal and Luke Hall, the latter with just :30 left in the game, to even the score at 10. The Bishops won the ensuing face-off and set up a shot for the win, but junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) saw his shot saved by Messiah keeper Evan Stoker.
In overtime, junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball, and Messiah's Drew Gugliuzza was called for delay of game on the play, giving the Bishops a man-up opportunity. After junior attacker Drew Gouhin (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had a shot go wide, the Bishops retained possession and Gouhin set up Tennant for the game-winner.
Ohio Wesleyan reeled off 4 consecutive goals to break a 2-2 second-quarter tie, with senior midfielder Derek Bacchiochi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Hildebrand each scoring twice during that run.
Messiah's Garrett Amsbaugh scored with :05 left in the first half, and the Falcons carried that momentum over into the third quarter, opening the period with 3 straight goals to knot the game at 6.
Tennant responded with a pair of goals in the closing minutes of the quarter and Ohio Wesleyan took an 8-6 lead into the fourth period, with the teams trading goals twice before Messiah's late rally.
Tennant led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Bacchiochi finished with 3 goals and an assist. Jeschke recorded 5 assists. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) stopped 11 shots in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.
Amsbaugh had 3 goals and an assist for the Falcons. Stoker was credited with 9 saves.
