Newman, Blankenship All-NCAC in Heptathlon

Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) and sophomore Jayson Blankenship (Medina) finished 1-2 in the standings to win All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors at the NCAC multi-event championship, hosted by Denison University on Saturday and Sunday in Granville.

Newman won the event with 4776 points to 4252 for Blankenship.  It was Newman's third consecutive conference championship in the event and his fourth straight all-conference citation, following a second-place finish in 2015.

Sophomore Nate Minic (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) finished 10th with 3559 points.

Newman opened Sunday's competition with an :08.55 in the 60-meter hurdles, the best time of the meet.  His closed out the meet with efforts of 13-3½ in the pole vault and 3:08.06 in the 1000-meter run, both ranking second on the day.  On Saturday, Newman was sixth overall in the 60-meter dash (:07.37) before turning in the second-best long jump (20-1½) and then building his lead with the meet's best efforts in the shot put (40-5) and high jump (6-2¾).

Blankenship's effort of 13-11¼ in the pole vault was the best of the day.  He also finished the 60-meter hurdles in :09.16, seventh overall, and clocked a 3:09.10 in the 1000-meter run, sixth overall.  On Saturday, Blankenship tied for second overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of :07.33.  His long jump of 18-5¾ tied for eighth overall, his throw of 32-9¾ in the shot put was fifth-best in the meet, and his high jump of 5-5¼ was seventh on the day.

Minic turned in a time of :10.74 in the 60-meter hurdles, cleared 8-8½ in the pole vault, and finished the 1000-meter run in 3:19.23.  On Saturday, Minic opened the meet with the best clocking in the 60-meter dash (:07.31) and the best leap in the long jump (20-6½).  His throw of 33-9¼ in the shot put was fourth overall, and his high jump of 5-3 tied for ninth.

The 18 points scored by Ohio Wesleyan in the event will carry over to this weekend's NCAC championship meet.
