Junior midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.) scored to break a 10-10 tie as Ohio Wesleyan assembled a 9-0 second-half run and went on to defeat Illinois Wesleyan in non-conference action on Thursday at Selby Stadium.
Jamieson had scored midway through the first quarter to wipe out a 1-0 deficit, but Alex Doorenbos answered with a goal just 25 seconds player and Bailey Marth and Will Rossi followed with goals to give the Titans a 4-1 lead with 3:07 left in the first quarter.
The Bishops rallied with scores by junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and senior midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) to pull within 4-3.
Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) scored twice during a 3-0 run that put the Bishops up, 7-6, midway through the second quarter, but this time it was Illinois Wesleyan that scored a pair of goals during the final minutes of the period, and the visitors led by an 8-7 count at the intermission. After the teams traded goals twice to open the third quarter, the Titans were ahead, 10-9.
Hildebrand scored off a pass from senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) to even the game at 10 with 10:51 left in the quarter, and Jamieson came through with a man-up goal at the 8:26 mark to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay. Junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Hildebrand closed out the third quarter with goals, and the Bishops continued the run into the fourth quarter with scores by Jeschke, Jamieson, and Leyden before additional goals by Jeschke and Leyden increased the margin to 18-10 with just over a minute left in the game.
Hildebrand led the Bishops with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Jamieson and Jeschke finished with 4 goals and an assist apiece, and Leyden added 3 goals and 2 assists. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) went the distance in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, recording 15 saves.
Nick Winter had 3 goals and 2 assists for the Titans. Benigno Houser stopped 18 shots for Illinois Wesleyan.
