Junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek), senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon), and freshman attacker Will Anton (Madison, N.J.) scored as 12th/15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan rallied to within a single goal midway through the fourth quarter, but fifth-ranked Cabrini held on for a non-conference win on Wednesday in Radnor, Pa.
The Cavaliers had taken an 8-5 lead on a Jake Klein goal early in the third quarter.
Tennant tallied a man-up goal with 4:55 left in the third quarter, and the Bishops closed to within 8-7 on Leyden's goal early in the fourth quarter. Cabrini answered with a Matt Loparo goal just under a minute later, but Anton scored to make it a 9-8 game with 7:02 left in regulation time.
Leyden and junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) each had shots at evening the score in the closing minutes, but Leyden's shot went high and Jeschke's was wide. After a timeout with 3:07 left, Cabrini's Joey Hoey forced a turnover by senior midfielder Derek Bacchiochi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and the Cavaliers cleared the ball. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) stopped a shot by Klein with 1:44 remaining to keep the score at 9-8, but Cabrini's Loparo picked up the loose ball. The Cavaliers received a shot-clock warning with :45 to play, but with the Bishop defense looking to force a shot or turnover to get a chance at the tying goal, senior defenseman Aaron Carroll (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) was called for a slash with :22 remaining, and Cabrini was able to run out the clock.
Cabrini had taken an early lead on a Loparo goal, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with scores by senior midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Leyden to go up, 2-1.
Cabrini's Ty Kostack and Leyden traded goals as the first quarter ended with the Bishops holding a 3-2 lead, and Timmy Brooks and Leyden traded goals for a 4-3 Ohio Wesleyan lead early in the second quarter.
The Cavaliers then went on a 4-0 run that included a pair of goals by Jordan Krug, and a Brooks goal gave the hosts a 7-4 lead late in the second quarter.
Junior midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.) scored during the final seconds of the first half to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 7-5 and set up the second-half action.
Leyden led the Bishops with 4 goals. Rigger recorded 13 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.
Klein had a goal and 2 assists for Cabrini. Riley White made 7 saves for the Cavaliers.
