Senior midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored twice as 12th/15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan built a 6-2 first-quarter lead and went on to a win over Oberlin in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Oberlin.
Hamblett scored to give the Bishops a 2-1 lead just over 3 minutes into the contest, then added a goal to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 5-2 after Oberlin's Ian McCague had brought the Yeomen to within 4-2. Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) followed with a goal just 10 seconds later, and that 6-2 margin was how the first quarter would end.
Reese Koburov opened the second-quarter scoring with a goal that brought the Yeomen within 6-3, but Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the next 5 scores, with Hildebrand collecting 2 goals and an assist and junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scoring twice. McCague ended the Ohio Wesleyan run with a goal late in the half, but junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) answered with a score with just :06 to play in the period, giving the Bishops a 12-4 lead at the break.
Tennant and Hildebrand scored goals in the opening minutes of the third quarter to extend the lead to double digits, and the lead would remain there for the remainder of the game.
Jeschke led the Bishops with 4 goals and 5 assists, Tennant scored 5 times, and Hildebrand finished with 4 goals and 2 assists. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) recorded 3 saves in the first 38-plus minutes, and sophomore Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.), freshman Zach Brasser (Westport, Conn./Millbrook (N.Y.) School), and senior Xander Pacilio (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) also patrolled the Ohio Wesleyan goal.
McCague had 2 goals and an assists for Oberlin. Calvin Filson finished with 12 saves for the Yeomen.
