Baseball Splits with 18th-Ranked Spartans

Sophomore outfielder Jon Erhard (Newark/Newark Catholic) drove in 3 runs as Ohio Wesleyan built a 5-0 lead and went on to defeat 18th-ranked Case Reserve in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday in Cleveland.

In the opener, CWRU's Mark Gross and Tony Yambor combined on a 4-hit shutout as the Spartans took the win.

Erhard singled home 2 runs and later came around to score on a single by junior catcher Dalton Henderson (Bethel/New Richmond) as the Bishops took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, then singled in a run in the top of the fourth to increase the Bishop lead to 4-0.  Senior third baseman Colin Stolly (Lima/Central Catholic) knocked in a run later in the inning for a 5-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard on Tyler Wypiszenski's RBI double in the fifth, but the Bishops got the run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by freshman outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City).

Wypiszenski plated a run in the eighth for CWRU, but sophomore first baseman Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights) delivered a 2-run single in the top of the ninth for the 8-3 final
.

McWilliams went 4-for-6 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, and senior outfielder Michael Blatchford (Shaker Heights), Erhard, and Stolly had 2 hits apiece.

Sophomore righthander Chris Punka (Tallmadge/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) worked 3.1 innings in relief to pick up the win.

Casey McConihe was the starting and losing pitcher for Case Reserve.

In the opener, Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the third, with freshman outfielder Nick Sala (Oviedo, Fla.) leading off with a walk and sophomore shortstop Carter Franklin (Wooster/Canton Central Catholic) hit by a pitch, but Gross got out of the inning unscathed, stranding Sala at third.

The Spartans struck for 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, capped by Rocco Maue's run-scoring double, and added 3 runs in the seventh with the help of an RBI double by Wypiszenski.

Sophomore first baseman Mitchell Raley (Hamilton/Badin) had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan.

Senior righthander Kevin Zullo (Hudson)
was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
