Leyden Sparks First-Half Run for Men's Lacrosse

Senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) tallied a pair of goals during a 6-0 first-half run that helped 17th/18th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan break open a non-conference win over Alma on Thursday at Selby Stadium.

The Bishops raced to an early lead when sophomore midfielder Lucas Smith (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) scored just over 2 minutes into the action and junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) followed with a goal less than a minute later.

Jake Ellens brought Alma within 2-1 with a goal at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter.

Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) kicked off the Bishop run with a goal midway through the period, and Leyden and senior midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) followed with scores as the Bishops took a 5-1 lead after the first period.  Tennant rang up another goal early in the second quarter, followed by a Leyden score midway through the period and a goal by freshman midfielder Sean Gellen (Davis, Calif./Senior) at the 6:34 mark.

Alma ended the Bishop run when Levi Peterson scored with :04.9 left in the first half, but the Bishops got scores from Leyden and Hildebrand during the opening minute of the second half and would go on to outscore the Fighting Scots, 6-0, during the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Leyden led the Bishops with 3 goals and 2 assists, while junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and Smith each contributed 2 goals and an assist.  Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) had 3 saves during the first 46 minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, and sophomore Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.), senior Xander Pacilio (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill), and freshman Connar Mulcahy (Arlington, Va./Gonzaga (D.C.)) each saw action during the fourth quarter.

Jake Ellens led Alma with a goal and an assist.  Cameron Stelljes recorded 22 saves for the Fighting Scots.
